10 inns and lodges where the fireplace in your room is a real working one, not a decorative electric panel.

The real wood-burning experience

Twin Farms in Barnard is the top of the market — many suites have working wood fireplaces, staff lay the fire, and rates run $1,900-$3,500 all-inclusive. The Pitcher Inn in Warren is the more human-scale version at $550-$900, with genuinely characterful rooms (the Mountain Room has a stone hearth). Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford has wood-burning fireplaces in about a dozen rooms at $300-$450 — the Loft Suite is the one to book.

Gas fireplaces that still feel real

For gas — which most guests actually prefer because you can turn it on at 2am — the Woodstock Inn’s Tavern Wing rooms are excellent at $400-$700. Basin Harbor’s cottages in Vergennes ($350-$600) each have their own gas hearth and a lake view. Skip anywhere that lists 'fireplace' but shows a flat-screen flame effect in photos — I have been burned by that at two properties near Killington that shall remain unnamed.

Booking tip

Always call directly and ask 'is it wood, gas, or electric, and is it working this season?' Vermont insurance rules mean some historic inns have quietly retired their wood fireplaces. Confirm before you pay a $200 premium for the 'fireplace room.'

Good to know

Do Vermont hotels charge extra for firewood?+

Twin Farms and Rabbit Hill include it; some smaller B&Bs charge $20-$35 per bundle or ask you to pre-order. Ask when booking.

Best time of year for a fireplace room?+

Late October through March. Foliage weekends (first three weekends of October) book out 4-6 months ahead at fireplace properties.
