A town on a waterfall
Few downtowns have a natural spectacle at their heart, but Middlebury does — Otter Creek drops 20 feet over Middlebury Falls right between the shops, best seen from the Main Street bridge or the pedestrian walkway. Vermont’s longest river runs straight through the town center.
The college
Middlebury College, founded in 1800, gives the town its energy and culture — a free, well-regarded Museum of Art, concerts and lectures, and the summer Bread Loaf Writers' Conference tradition. The handsome campus is an easy walk from downtown.
Downtown & the Marble Works
Middlebury’s compact center mixes independent shops, the Vermont Folklife Center, Otter Creek Bakery and American Flatbread in the repurposed Marble Works district beside the river. It is one of Vermont’s most satisfying small downtowns to wander.
Just outside town
Weybridge’s UVM Morgan Horse Farm, the Pulp Mill covered bridge, and orchards and farm stands in every direction make Middlebury a natural base for the whole Champlain Valley.
