Where to stay
Three tiers matter. Top: Lodge at Spruce Peak ($450-$900) and Topnotch Resort ($350-$650) — ski-in and full amenities. Mid: Green Mountain Inn in the village ($200-$400) with walkable dinner options, or Trapp Family Lodge ($250-$500) for cross-country and views. Budget: Sun & Ski Inn ($130-$220), Golden Eagle Resort ($150-$250). Avoid staying in Waterbury and driving in on ski weekends — Route 108 backs up badly.
Beyond skiing
Summer is arguably better than winter here. Stowe Recreation Path (5.5 miles, paved) is one of the best rail-trail walks in New England. Ben & Jerry’s factory tour ($6) is in Waterbury, 12 minutes down the road. Cold Hollow Cider Mill for donuts. Alchemist Brewery for Heady Topper (Wednesdays and Fridays, 11am-6pm, cans limited). Hike Mount Mansfield via the Long Trail from Underhill for the best summit day in Vermont.

Is Stowe worth the premium over Killington or Sugarbush?+
For non-ski activities and dining, yes. For pure skiing value, no — Killington delivers more terrain per dollar.
How long do I need in Stowe?+
3 nights for winter (2 ski days, 1 rest day). 4-5 nights in summer/fall to hit hiking, food, and cider/beer stops without rushing.
