Is Jay Peak really that much snowier?
Yes. Its position in the far north catches moisture that dissipates before it reaches the resorts further south, and seasonal totals well over 300 inches are normal. The flip side is frequent low cloud and wind that can hold the tram, so build in a plan B.
Do I need a passport?
Only if you intend to cross into Quebec, which many visitors do for the drive or for a night in Montreal. The resort itself is entirely in Vermont and needs nothing special, but a passport or enhanced licence is worth carrying if Canada is on the itinerary.
What is the resort's recent history?
Jay was at the centre of a well-publicised fraud case involving foreign investment funding in the 2010s, was placed under court-appointed receivership, and was sold to new owners in 2022. The skiing was never the problem, and the mountain has operated normally throughout.
How remote is it, really?
Genuinely remote by Vermont standards. There is no resort village of shops and restaurants in the way Stowe or Stratton has one, and the nearest real towns are Montgomery Center, Jay and Newport. Bring what you need or plan a supply stop on the drive in.
