The most photographed village in Vermont — Rockefeller money kept it perfect, and the room rates reflect that. Situated in the Ottauquechee River Valley of central Vermont, Woodstock is frequently described as the prettiest small town in America — and for good reason. Unlike many American towns that underwent rapid post-war modernization, Woodstock remains almost entirely preserved in its 19th-century form. There are no overhead utility wires cluttering its streets, having been buried underground through philanthropic grants, no commercial neon signs and no big-box retail.That preservation is largely the legacy of four generations of conservationists, culminating with Laurance S. Rockefeller and his wife Mary French Rockefeller. Together they funded historical restoration, established Vermont’s only National Historical Park and protected the surrounding hill country from sprawl. Today Woodstock centres on an oval Village Green anchored by the white-picket Woodstock Inn & Resort, with Federal and Greek Revival brick homes, covered timber bridges and working Jersey dairy farms around it.

Is Woodstock expensive compared with the rest of Vermont?

Yes, noticeably. The preservation that makes the village beautiful also caps how many rooms exist, and demand in foliage season and over holidays is relentless. If the village rates are beyond your budget, look at Quechee, White River Junction or Rutland and drive in.

When is peak foliage here?

Central Vermont at Woodstock's elevation usually peaks in the first half of October, with the hills above the village turning a week or so before the valley floor. Book rooms for October months ahead, and expect US-4 and the back roads to be slow with leaf traffic on weekends.

Can you do Woodstock without a car?

You can spend a whole weekend on foot inside the village: green, shops, restaurants, the national park and the Mount Tom trails all start within walking distance. But the covered bridges, the outlying farms and Quechee Gorge all need wheels.

Is it worth visiting in winter?

It is arguably the prettiest season, with snow on the greens and no leaf-season crush. Cross-country trails, the small ski hill at Saskadena Six and easy access to Killington fill the days, though a few seasonal shops and farm attractions run reduced hours.
