Do I need a car in Middlebury?
Not for the town itself, which is compact and easy on foot. You do for the Snow Bowl, Ripton, Lake Dunmore, and the Champlain Valley farms, none of which have useful public transport.
Can visitors use the college campus?
The grounds, the art museum and the arts centre are generally open to the public, and the campus is a pleasant walk uphill from downtown. Expect the town to be full and rooms to be scarce around graduation in late May and during the August Bread Loaf conference.
Is there much to eat here for a town this size?
More than you would expect, because a college of 2,500 students supports it. The Main Street, Bakery Lane and Marble Works blocks hold most of it, and it is nearly all independent rather than chain.
What is the best time of year to come?
Late September into mid-October for foliage over the Champlain Valley, or June through August for swimming, the gaps and the farm stands. Late March and April are mud season, when the countryside is at its least photogenic but rooms are cheapest.
