What is the difference between Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms?
They are two separate places about two miles apart with separate tickets, often confused. The Museum is a campus of collected buildings and Americana; the Farms is a working farm and conservation estate on the lakeshore with trails, animals and a cheese operation.
Is Shelburne a good base for Burlington?
Yes. It is seven miles south on US-7, about fifteen minutes to downtown Burlington and ten to the airport. It is quieter than the city and often has availability on weekends when Burlington fills, but you will be driving everywhere.
Is the museum open in winter?
The main campus operates as a seasonal open-air museum from late spring into late October, when most of the historic buildings are staffed and unlocked. There is limited winter programming in the year-round gallery building, so check before planning a January visit around it.
Is there enough here for children?
Plenty. The Teddy Bear factory tour, the animals and Farm Barn at Shelburne Farms, and the museum's carousel and circus buildings all land well with kids. Add the beach at Shelburne Bay in summer and you have two easy days.
