Should I stay in Warren or Waitsfield?

Warren is quieter and closer to the Sugarbush Access Road, so it suits people who want to ski and eat in. Waitsfield, six miles north on VT-100, has more shops, restaurants and services, and sits between both ski areas.

Can I manage the Mad River Valley without a car?

Barely. A free valley shuttle bus normally runs between the villages and the ski areas through the winter season, but outside those months and those hours you are stuck. Bring a car if you plan to do anything beyond one mountain.

Is Warren worth visiting in summer?

Yes, and it is much cheaper than winter. Swimming holes, the gap roads for cycling, lift-served and cross-country mountain biking, and a Fourth of July parade in the village that is famously homemade and irreverent.

How reliable is the snow?

The Mad River Valley sits high and catches good storms, so January through mid-March is the safe window. December and early April can be thin, and both mountains rely heavily on snowmaking at the shoulders of the season.
